Par bangla toh ab bhi chamak raha hai!

Asian Paints, an Indian multinational paint company, collaborated with Ogilvy and Mather, Mumbai, to create a humorous spot showcasing the durability of their paint. The ad’s punchline, delivered by the barber saying, “colour lagane ka time aa gaya hai,” cleverly reveals he’s referring to painting the haveli. The haveli was central to the spot, and although an actual one in Rajasthan was initially chosen, logistical issues led the team to build a replica set approved by the client.

Cyrus Oshidar, then head of MTV, played the nawab, a character with a love for finer things in life, his look evolving through various wigs to show the passage of time. The actor who played the barber wasn’t the first choice, but his performance and unique appearance, enhanced with makeup and paper balls padded in his mouth, made him a standout.

The ad was shot by the late Ashok Mehta, incorporating motion control camera techniques, where the camera pans up to the haveli and back down to show the ageing of characters while the haveli remains unchanged. Production designer Sonali Bhatia added intricate details, like the pull-out drawer in the set. With its playful and witty narrative, the spot successfully conveyed the enduring nature of the paint in a fun, engaging way.
